The study was conducted by the National Institutes of Health, jointly with researchers from the University of North Carolina. It was based on 182 adults with frequent migraines.

Researchers have found that a diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids and low in linoleic acid can soothe chronic headaches.

Omega-3 fatty acids can be found in fish and shellfish.

While linoleic acid is a polyunsaturated fatty acid found in plants.

It is found, for example, in nut and seed oils, as well as in foods such as soybeans and corn.

The study noted that people who ate a diet low in vegetable oil and higher in fatty fish experienced 30-40 percent fewer headaches per day.

Hours of severe headaches per day were also reduced by 30 percent.

Overall headache days per month were also reduced by up to 40 percent when compared to people who ate more vegetable oils.

Blood samples from people who preferred fatty fish also showed lower levels of lipids associated with pain.

Although the frequency and pain of migraines decreased in people who took more fish oil, their quality of life reported only “slight improvements”.

The pain associated with migraines still has a huge impact on their lives.

This neurological disease is already one of the most common causes of chronic pain, lost work time, and poor quality of life worldwide.

More than four million people around the world suffer from this condition.

Research shows that more than 90 percent of people with chronic headaches are unable to function normally during an attack.

Women, in particular, are prone to chronic migraines, especially between the ages of 18 and 44.

Currently, preventative treatment can help manage chronic pain with nutritional supplements, lifestyle changes and medications.

Its goal is to reduce the frequency, pain, and duration of migraines.

Dr Luigi Ferrucci of the National Institutes of Health commented: “This research found intriguing evidence that dietary changes have the potential to improve a very debilitating chronic pain condition such as migraines.”

He added that this preventative solution has no downsides to “often prescribed medications.”

Researchers have argued that changes in diet could offer some relief to the millions of people who suffer from chronic headaches.

They concluded, “This is further evidence that the foods we eat can influence pain pathways.”
